Wissenschaftszentrum Arnold Schönberg und die Wiener Schule

Collection, 1931-1961

Since October 2016, the Arnold Schönberg and the Viennese School Research Centre has been located at the Institute for Musicology and Interpretation Research (IMI) and represents, among other things, an institutional link between the Arnold Schönberg Center and the mdw. The subject of the research centre is the "Viennese School" as a phenomenon that had a lasting and worldwide influence on the music of the 20th century.

Depositum Universal Edition 
The Arnold Schönberg and the Viennese School Research Centre preserves a comprehensive part of the Universal Edition correspondence from the years 1931 to 1961, which is on permanent loan to the Institute. The correspondence covers all areas of work of the music publishing house, which was founded in 1901 and, in addition to educational literature and classical-romantic literature, published the latest music from the very beginning: Communication with composers, musicians, event organisers and radio stations, educational institutions, cultural-political authorities, the media, collecting societies, publishers and music dealers, material production companies, etc. - as well as UE internal correspondence between travelling employees and, from 1937, between Universal Edition London and the publishing house in Vienna. This collection contains correspondence from many composers published by UE during this period, including Arnold Schönberg, Anton Webern, Alexander Zemlinsky, Gian-Francesco Malipiero, Goffredo Petrassi, Dimitri Shostakovich and Bruno Maderna.

Founder of Schoenberg Ensemble, of which he was the violist and artistic director until 1991. From 1976 until the end of the quartet's existence in 2009 violist of the Schoenberg Quartet. Active as conductor, teacher and arranger.

Seligman, Misha, 1921-2022

Collection, 1886–1996: photographs, correspondence, documents, articles, clippings, recordings etc.

Misha Seligman, son of Maria Seligmann, born Kolisch, sister of Gertrud Schönberg. His estate contains letters from Arnold Schoenberg and others, as well as letters, photographs and documents relating to the Kolisch family history. A large part of the collection goes back to the estate of Maria Seligmann.

Swaby Rice, Helen Bell (1916-2019)

Collection (1930-2019): 1 folder

Helen Swaby, noted violinist with many music awards both in Canada and the United States. Swaby and pianist Frances Mullen had played Schönberg’s Violin Concerto Op. 36 for him at his home on Rockingham Avenue in February 1940, to receive coaching from him. Following that encounter, the two artists played the concerto’s second movement on NBC Radio (before the work’s official premiere on December 6, 1940).
