The Library of Congress--established in 1800 by Thomas Jefferson, it is the National Library of the United States. It is one of the three largest libraries in the world. It has been the recipient of a number of Schoenberg-related items. In 1951, Schoenberg deposited "all of my correspondence, comprising letters and copies of all my letters and letters which I received, partly from friends, partly from enemies" in the Clarke Whittall Foundation Collection. Schoenberg letters and other related material exist in many other collections in the Library, including the Coolidge Foundation, the Koussevitzky Foundation, the Hans Moldenhauer, Edward Steuermann, Alexander von Zemlinsky collections, the Archives of Modern Music, as well as others. Most Schoenbergiana resides in one of two divisions, the Music Division, or the Recorded Sound Division.
